Padel Racket Weight Guide: Does Heavier Mean Better?

Wilson Defy LS V1 — lightweight padel racket weight guide

Updated August 2026.

Shape and balance get discussed constantly. Weight gets glossed over — usually reduced to "lighter is easier." That's incomplete, and it leads people to buy the wrong racket. Here's what the number actually means.

The standard range

Most adult padel rackets fall between 350g and 375g. That's a narrower band than it sounds — 25 grams is roughly the weight of a padel ball — but it produces a noticeably different feel in the hand across a full match.

Weight Feel Best for
350–360g Fast, easy to swing Beginners, arm-sensitive players, long sessions in heat
360–370g Balanced Most intermediate players
370g+ Powerful, demanding Advanced players with strong technique and conditioning

Why heavier isn't simply "more power"

The physics say a heavier racket transfers more force to the ball. The reality is that it only does so if you can still swing it properly.

A racket that's too heavy for you slows your reaction time at the net, arrives late on fast exchanges, and tires your arm — at which point your technique degrades and you lose more power than the extra weight ever gained you. Power comes from clean contact at speed, not from mass alone.

Weight and balance work together

This is the part most guides miss. Two rackets weighing exactly the same can feel completely different depending on where that weight sits.

A 370g racket with low balance can feel lighter through the swing than a 360g racket with high balance, because the weight is closer to your hand and requires less effort to accelerate.

So don't judge a racket on the gram figure alone. Check both specs together — our guide to padel racket balance covers the other half of this equation.

What UAE conditions change

Heat and humidity make weight matter more here than in temperate climates. A racket that feels comfortable for 30 minutes indoors can feel considerably heavier at minute 70 on an outdoor court in September.

If most of your play is outdoors between May and September, weighting your choice toward the lighter end of your range is a reasonable adjustment — not because you're less capable, but because sustained heat compounds fatigue faster.

What about women's rackets?

Rackets marketed for women are typically at the lighter end of the range, often 350–360g. There's nothing gendered about the physics — these are simply lighter rackets, and plenty of men choose them for the same reasons. Pick by weight and balance, not by how the box is marketed.

A practical rule

If you're unsure, go lighter. It's easier to add weight to a racket — overgrips and protectors both add a few grams — than to make a heavy racket feel lighter. Starting at the lower end of your range gives you room to adjust.

Frequently asked questions

What weight padel racket should a beginner use?

Generally 350–365g. Lighter rackets are easier to manoeuvre, gentler on the arm, and more forgiving over a full match — all of which help while technique is still developing.

Do heavier padel rackets give more power?

Only if you can swing them properly. A racket that's too heavy slows your reaction time and causes fatigue, which degrades technique and ultimately costs you more power than the extra mass provides.

What's the difference between a 360g and 370g padel racket?

Ten grams is a small absolute difference but noticeable over a long match. The 370g racket will generate more force on clean contact; the 360g will be faster to react with and less tiring. Balance matters as much as the weight figure itself.

Are women's padel rackets different?

Mainly in weight — they tend to sit at the lighter end of the standard range, around 350–360g. Choose by the specs rather than the marketing label.

Can I add weight to a padel racket?

Yes. Overgrips and edge protectors each add a few grams, and specialist lead tape can be applied for more significant adjustment. Reducing a racket's weight is much harder, which is why erring lighter is the safer starting point.
