What makes a racket a beginner racket

Three things, and none of them are the price.

Shape. A round racket puts the sweet spot in the middle of the face, where a developing player is most likely to make contact. Diamond shapes move it towards the tip, which rewards good technique and punishes everything else.

Balance and weight. Between 350g and 365g, balanced towards the handle, is manoeuvrable enough to react at the net and stable enough not to twist on off-centre hits.

Core. A softer EVA core absorbs more of the impact. That means less power on the smash, and considerably less strain on your elbow and shoulder while your technique is still forming.

What to spend

Between AED 250 and AED 500 buys a properly playable first racket. Below that, construction quality drops off sharply. Above it, you are paying for performance characteristics you will not be able to use yet — and in some cases for a racket that will actively hold you back.

Common questions

Should I buy a racket or keep renting? If you play weekly, a racket usually costs less than a few months of rental — and a consistent racket makes learning faster than a different rental each week.

Can I start with an advanced racket? You can, but it will slow your progress and it is the most common cause of padel elbow in new players. Start round and soft.

How long before I outgrow it? Most players are ready to change after a year of regular play, when they start finding the middle of the face consistently.
